Soraya

Amazon Warrior of the Moon

Inca Warrior

Tasida Tamboo Koritsi (Former Social Apprentice)

Soraya was born on an eclipse of the moon during an alignment of the planets to an Inca tribe. Her hair is as black as a raven's feathers, her eyes the color of green jade. She bears the tattoo of a hawk, her totem animal.

She grew into a strong warrior, much stronger then the rest of the men in her tribe. Her ability to astral project made her impossible to defeat in battle, but caused many to fear her and her power.  For this she was condemned to be sacrificed to the guardian of harvest.

As they were about to ignite the flames, the tribe heard thunderous noises.  The ground began to shake under their feet. The tribe knew what that it all meant: War. A horde of Vikings came towards them, lead by the mighty warlord Eric, Son of Hell. Eric’s reputation had reached the Inca tribe; he had never been beaten and he was a fierce warrior. Forgetting Soraya, they took up their weapons and began to fight.

Soraya tried to get free from her binding ropes as she watched her people being slaughtered; her own family caught in the middle. She was almost free when she heard a terrible scream. She turned to see Eric kill her family with his already stained sword.

With a mighty scream she leapt in front of Eric and began to fight with a passion she didn’t even know she had. She almost beat him, but Eric was the stronger and had an army to back him. He was impressed with her skills, however, and decided to keep her alive. After all, she would make a good slave.

The Vikings captured the healthy among the Inca and loaded them into their fearsome boats like cattle.  They traveled many days on the sea, agonizing days for Soraya. Already condemned, they now blamed her for the Viking attack. They claimed Soraya had made the Guardians angry, because she was a woman and women should not fight. She stopped listening after the third day. She didn’t believe a word they said and thought they were both ignorant and delusional.

She vowed to kill Eric. First she had to get better at fighting, then she would face him again. Ignoring the derogatory remarks of the tribe, she focused on revenge and escape. She observed the Vikings fighting techniques when they sparred, and adapted it to her own style. She was a quick study and learned much on the journey.

Soraya wasn’t about to let the Vikings sell her to some smelly warlord. She planned her route of escape. She understood that none of her tribe would follow a woman or a woman's plan, so she couldn’t help them.

After many weeks, they arrived in a strange land. Soraya saw her opportunity for escape as Eric negotiated for supplies. She did a double back flip and kicked two of Eric’s men down. She knew she couldn’t fight all of the Vikings, so she did another back flip off the deck of the ship and onto the dock. Soraya hit the ground running, but because of the lack of food and water she'd had on the journey, the Vikings gained on her. She would have to fight or die.

Soraya turned, determined to fight for her freedom, when she heard a strange whistle. Looking up, she saw a disc flying through the air towards her. She was stunned as it flew over her head and streaked toward the Vikings. Three were knocked down as the disc arched up and around, but  the whistle was interrupted by a fierce warrior yell. Soraya looked up and saw a woman spinning down out of the sky. Tall and leather-clad with a drawn sword, she landed beside Soraya and caught the disc in her empty hand. Another warrior appeared on Soraya's other side, armed and ready with sais.

The two women looked at each other, then at Soraya, then at the Vikings.  The dark-haired warrior smiled, spun her sword and advanced on them. The blonde took a protective step up in front of Soraya. The men backed away, turned, and ran for their leader and the ship.

The two warrior women introduced themselves as Xena and Gabrielle. The pair invited Soraya to travel with them for a while and she agreed. She was a quick study and picked up language, customs, and fighting techniques as they journeyed.

Along the way, Gabrielle told stories about the Amazon nation. Soraya loved listening to them and was taken by the idea of a tribe of only women warriors. Gabrielle spoke often of a particular tribe, Themiscyra, and the Queen who led them.

Unaccustomed to constant traveling, Soraya decided to set out in search of this tribe. She thanked Xena and Gabrielle for all their help and for teaching her so much.  Then she set out to join the united Amazon Nation of Themiscyra.
