Agonistes
Philiaoneiro
Daughter of Ishkaphilia, Sister to Talia
Her mother was Ishkaphilia, Priestess of Artemis, of the Icaria
tribe. Agonistes was born on the island Icaria at a city called
Nas. Her mother died in a battle with Romans when she was 10 years
old. One year later, Nista, as she was called, decided to leave
the tribe. She was young and ignorant, angry and confused and just
doing what she thought she should. She ran off, stole a fishing
boat and fled to the mainland.
She met a wonderful man, a seller of fine horses. He intrigued
her and they spent the afternoon talking about the bloodlines of
his stock. He asked her to accompany him on his trip to the next
city, and she agreed readily, seeing in him a companion she could
travel and learn from.
Unfortunately she had no knowledge of the true nature of men.
On the first night on the trail, he attempted to force himself on
her. She struggled with him and succeeded in shoving him away and
off. She grabbed the first horse she came to, a young mare called
Missisypie, one of his best blooded animals, and galloped away.
Since that moment she was on the run. She learned to stay away
from men and took to stealing, to lying, and to fleeing.
When she rushed through a city called Sabor, she met a wise
philosopher called Thalo who had studied all over the world and
was very smart and wealthy. He claimed to have known both her
mother and her sister Talia, whom Nista hadn’t seen in many years. Her sister
had been an Amazon trapper who couldn’t obey commands. She had
left her tribe when Agonistes was three years old. Out in the
world, she had become a bounty hunter as free as a bird, traveling
all over the world.
He also told her that she had family in the Amazon tribe
Themiscyra and that she should visit them. Being arrogant and
alone as she was, she didn’t even consider it. Instead, she
stayed at Sabor, asking to learn from Thalo instead. He agreed and
taught her everything he knew over the course of another year. The
subjects ranged from literature and folklore to language and
philosophy. She learned much in that year, but in her headstrong
way, decided she had learned enough and prepared to set out on her
travels again.
On the day that she was to leave, two women visited Thalo's
house. He explained to her that they were two Priestesses of
Artemis, just like her mother.
The elder of the two, a gray-haired wrinkled old woman, looked
her over as if she were a horse. "We’ll take her, "
she stated, turning back to Thalo.
It instantly set Nista’s back up. "Take me where?"
Thalo answered that the women were traveling to Themiscyra and
needed someone who could help with the hunting and scouting and
protection. They would pay her well and she would have
companionship on the journey. He reminded her that she would also
find a member of her family in Themiscyra.
The younger of the two, a gentle dark-haired woman barely older
than Nista, smiled at her. "It is Artemis’ will that you
come with us. Protect us, please."
Agonistes didn't know why, but she decided to do it. She
grabbed her stuff and said farewell to Thalo. They mounted the
horses and begun their journey to Themiscyra.
Nista is both wild and unpredictable as well as loving and
caring. She tends to lose control of her temper and doesn’t
listen to others unless they have won her over, or unless she can
use them to get what she wants. She loves to shock and annoy and
uses the foulest language possible when cornered or threatened.
She is a professional in her ability to steal, a real pro who
leaves no traces. She is also a master of camouflage and hiding,
having learned to escape those who followed. Thalo taught her to
find solutions and to think, so she has a strategist’s mind. She
prefers to remain anonymous until she trusts, so when someone asks
her name she will reply with: "Outis emoi g' onoma." My
name is Nobody.
Agonistes has dark brown, shoulder length hair with a natural
wave in it. She has a very athletic build from being on the run
for years. She is about 5 ft 5 inches tall, with dark blue eyes
which have a yellow tint to them when she's happy. She has a
crescent shaped scar on her forehead which she paints red. A black
tattoo of her village circles her left bicep, and her teeth are
exceptionally white. Nista is currently fifteen summers.
She prefers to use alternative weapons such as brooms,
branches, or water – whatever comes to hand. She does carry one
weapon, a long sword made by her mother. The hilt has been made
from horse hooves and the blade is balsamed with cherry blossom,
which makes it glitter pink in the sun.
Her life motto is: Pistis, elpis, agape! Faith, hope, and
charity! Agonistes totem animals are the gray wolf and the
horse.
